Lawrence P. Cohen is the senior partner of the firm, who heads the Litigation Department. He has a substantial practice in personal injury litigation, as well as commercial litigation, and related tort actions. Mr. Cohen's achievements as a trial attorney have been recognized by the New Jersey Supreme Court which has designated him as a Certified Civil Trial Attorney. This recognition is only bestowed upon a few attorneys in the New Jersey who have extensive courtroom experience and who successfully pass a competitive examination. Since 2005, he has also been recognized as a Super Lawyer in the field of Litigation by the New Jersey Super Lawyers, an attorneys' rating service. This is an award which is given to less than 5% of the lawyers in the State. Mr. Cohen has also be accepted into the The Million Dollar Advocates Forum. Only trial lawyers who have received million and multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements are eligible for admission.
Mr. Cohen's experience as a Civil Trial Attorney covers a broad spectrum, including personal injury, commercial litigation, employment law, and zoning litigation. He is experienced in both the New Jersey State Court systems, and the New Jersey Federal Courts. In addition to admission in the Supreme Court of the State of New Jersey, he is also admitted to the Federal District Court of New Jersey and the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.
Mr. Cohen supervises an experienced team of lawyers at Lavery, Selvaggi, Abromitis & Cohen who have successfully tried many cases to verdict in the areas of corporate disputes, personal injury claims, employment matters, as well as a myriad of other types of litigation. Recently, he and the Litigation Department at the firm have represented injured clients who have recovered over $6.5 million with one outcome exceeding $3.5 million.
Mr. Cohen also practices before the New Jersey State Tax Court in representing municipalities and property owners in appeals of real estate tax assessments. He recently was successful in defending an assessment for a municipality amounting to $220 million. He has also represented tax payers in appealing tax assessments on commercial realty, such as office complexes, shopping centers, and apartment buildings.
Besides litigation, Mr. Cohen is well-versed in local government law having represented a number of municipalities, local boards, and public agencies. He has served as a Trustee for the New Jersey Institute of Local Government Attorneys. He has dealt with a broad range of issues and challenges confronting municipalities, public employees, and officials.
He is a member of the Bar of the State of New Jersey, the Federal Bar Association of New Jersey, and the New Jersey Association for Justice. He holds an undergraduate degree from Lehigh University and a Law Degree from Syracuse University.
